Learn Traditional Upholstery Techniques in the Loire Valley

If you've always wanted to try your hand at traditional upholstery, here is your chance to learn.

If you have an eye for antique furniture, and would love to restore an old piece back to its former glory, we will teach you all the appropriate skills of traditional upholstery in the beautiful surroundings of the Loire Valley. Meticulous workmanship and attention to detail are the hallmarks of Makers handcrafted, bespoke furniture. It is this idea of historic values that we aim to teach in a relaxed holiday atmosphere whether you are at the beginning, learning basic skills or developing skills that have already been acquired.

Each day after breakfast, you will be taken to the Makers workshops, where there will be both demonstrations and hands-on classes. These will include the use of tools and the basic principles of upholstery, i.e. webbing, springing, stuffing, re-covering and shallow buttoning.

After a light lunch you will enjoy some of the local culture with visits to Toile de Mayenne, a traditional fabric company established in 1806 that nestles in the beautiful French village of Fontaine-Daniel.

These courses are designed as a taster for those of you with little or no experience or for those of you who wish to improve your present skills.

Projects undertaken will depend on your preference but we recommend the following items of furniture:

• A dining chair
• A footstool
• A piano stool

If you cannot find any of these pieces just let us know. We ask that you discuss your chosen project with us before the course begins so that we can best fulfill all your requirements.
