A long kitchen island is one of the most eye-catching and practical features you can add to a kitchen — especially in an open plan or spacious layout. It effortlessly combines style, storage, and social function all in one.
One such customer from Bedfordshire approached us with their own ideas for a long kitchen island for their up coming kitchen renovation. Like many of our clients, they researched the kind of look they were after on Pinterest. They gathered many images of kitchen islands and made a final selection of 4. Each island had slightly different design details, all of which our client loved. So with all of this in mind we created a design that would work with their overall dimensions.
A Kitchen Island Haberdasher Style
The overall dimension would be 320cm long x 90cm high and 60cm deep. The design was based on a very simple haberdasher style. The island was divided into 4 sections, each with a deep soft-close draw above and two open shelf spaces below. Our customer has a beautiful collections of bowls and plates and the open-shelving would allow them to be displayed for all to see.

We made the island with solid French Oak throughout including all of the back panelling. To embue the slightly antiqued, haberdasher look, we applied an initial coat of an Osmo Oil Tint in Graphite. This crucial first coat meant that the deep grey minerals in the oil would sit in the grain of the oak, highlighting every variation in grain. We then applied a coat of Osmo oil clear to finish.
Our client chose a contemporary version of the traditional cup handle for the four drawers. The matt jet black metal looks absolutely stunning against the tones of the oak adding the perfect final touch.
Kitchen Island Delivery
As ever for the delivery of such a large item of furniture, all hands were on deck to help manoeuvre the island into place. Our client ended up using the island against a wall adjacent to her kitchen and looking out on to the dining area. Her exquisite eye for interior design is clear to see in some of the after delivery photos! What a stunning open space.
