A 5 Metre Dining Table for Northumberland
One of the largest tables we have been asked to make was for a Victorian mansion in Northumberland. The design of the table was to be based on our Pedestal Oak Refectory Table. We usually offer this table on our website in standard sizes for 6, 8 and 10 people. However, this particular client needed to scale-up the design with a rather large, formal dining space to furnish.
Large Table Dimensions
The requirement was for a main table to seat between 14 and 16 people. The client also wanted to add two removable extending leaves to allow them to add 4 extra people on occasion. With the knowledge of their seating requirements, the width of the chairs they would be using, and the dimensions of the room, we were able to calculate what size table would best suit their needs.
For the main table, we arrived at a length of 420cm and a width of 120cm. This would allow the client to seat 6 dining chairs comfortably down each side with plenty of spacing in between each one. One or two people could then be placed on each end as required. This gave their main table the capacity to seat 14 – 16 people.
Extending Table Leaves
We gave the two extending leaves a length of 60cm allowing the client to seat an extra person on each side. So an extra 4 people in total. This took their fully extended table to a length of 5.4 metres meeting the brief to seat 20 people.
It is worth noting that our client was using chairs with a width of 55cm – this is quite wide for a dining chair. Chairs with a slightly narrower seat width or the use of benches would allow space to seat even more people if required.
A Five Metre Table with 3 Pedestals
Because of the large dimensions of this five metre dining table, it was necessary to make the base with three pedestals to support the span of the top. The table top was also made in two halves and joined seamlessly over the central leg. The whole table was then stained to match the decor of Victorian dining room and finished with a matt lacquer.
