A Live Edge Oak Table for a Loire Valley Home
We were commissioned to make this live edge oak table for a Loire Valley home by the interior design company, 1508 London. We have custom built the table to their bespoke requirements, not only in dimension, but also in design and finish.
Like all our dining tables, the planks for this one comes from French oak that is over 100 years old. Our saw mill selects its’ timber from the forests of Brittany. The whole tree is then cut into planks and air dried and finally kiln dried. This time consuming but essential process creates the perfect moisture content for the stability of a live edge dining table.
A Bespoke Table Design
The live edge design was pretty much described through drawings provided by the designers. We added one or two tweaks to add stability to the base. This had to be rock solid in order to accommodate the weight and span of the 3.4 metre table top. They asked us not to fill any imperfections. So any knots and splits were a welcome and an integral part of the design. They also specified butterfly joins, strategically placed to add further stability to the larger splits. We used Wenge for these to add contrast.
A Natural Oil Wood Finish
Our clients wanted to match a particular oil finish they were having on their dining chairs. The manufacturers were not keen to give away information on the finish – but we we managed to it track down in the end. Hesse Lignals’ Natural Oil finish in Olive Gray was finally applied leaving a beautiful soft sheen and a real depth to the grain of the oak. We were more than pleased with the results.
