This large A-frame oak dining table found it’s beginnings in an AI image. Our client was at the planning stages of her dining room renovations and at the ideal time to contact us. She was looking for the perfect table design to match the scale of her dining room and used AI to describe exactly what she was after.

A few images of ideas is so useful to have when producing a bespoke table design. We could immediately see what kind of look she was trying to create. It made the whole process so much simpler for us but, it was still necessary to translate the design into something workable.
Solid Oak Dining Table
Our client wanted a really chunky and solid looking table, which on the surface might seem entirely feasible. It is a simple design after all. But what an AI image doesn’t do is calculate the physical limitations of the person making something of such large proportions. So when we were sent the design, we must admit there was an intake of breath on this side of the email! But of course, we were up for the challenge to build a table as large as we could handle.
Oak Table Dimensions
The overall dimensions would be 3 metres long by 150cm wide. We are well practiced in handling tables that are this long with an average width, but this extra girth took the design to new proportions. Our dining table tops usually have a depth of 45mm. We decided to give this top a ‘skirt’ by adding an extra plank of the same depth underneath the edges to create the illusion of a deeper top. The legs would be a sturdy 18cm wide on the sides and 15cm on the ends. Our client opted for a mid oak stain with a matt lacquer to finish.
A-Frame Table Design
Although the design of this A-frame oak dining table is a very simple one, it is a perfect example of classic engineering. Once you recognise the form, you can see it everywhere in daily life. In roof structures and playground swings, ladders and bridges, and of course furniture.
A triangle forms the basis of the A-frame shape which is the most stable geometric shape in structural engineering. If you put pressure on a square or rectangle shape, it will bend, but a triangle can’t change it’s form unless one of the angled sides changes length. So if the sides remain equal, the A-shape maintains it’s structure under the weight of any load. Or table top in this case. Any weight is distributed efficiently and transfers the downward forces to the ground.
A-Frame Dining Room Tables
A-frame dining tables have a such a simple silhouette that works fantastically well in a modern, farmhouse, Scandinavian, or rustic interior. The distinctive A shape evokes an architectural look that can make a dining table the centerpiece in an open-plan space.

Bespoke Table Commissions
Not everyone has the space for such a large table of course. This design can easily be scaled down to fit the proportions of a smaller dining space.
