Why Choose a Table with Banquette Seating?
Do you want to maximize a small dining space? Zone an open-plan kitchen? Create a less formal, relaxing dining nook? A table with banquette seating could be the perfect answer to your dining room dreams.
Banquette seating has a lot to offer a dining space if you want a bit more flexibility. This kind of set up actually takes up less floor space than a table with chairs. So if you are looking to save room – this could be the option for you.
The Advantages of Banquette Seating
The permanent nature of a banquette creates a real focal point within a room that might otherwise feel lacking. Building in some seating, and fixing the location of the dining table in an open-plan room creates the feeling of intention. It also does away with the issue of walking around both sides of the table, by creating one walk way. It literally buys you an extra metre in the room, if not more!
The space saving design of built-in or freestanding benches is the perfect solution for transforming an unloved corner of the kitchen. But what type of dining table would work best with banquette seating?

TYPES OF TABLES for BANQUETTE SEATING
Lets start with the most impractical table you could choose for banquette seating – a traditional table with 4 legs. The inevitable shimmy required to get in and out of banquette seating, makes using this kind of table a big no-no. By far the best solution is to choose a table with either a central pedestal or one with two pedestals. Having a table with legs set in away from the edges of the top creates plenty of space to get in and out of the table. A curved table top or one with rounded corners will make this manoevre even more smooth.

The Optimum Banquette Table Dimensions
Most dining tables are around 75/76 cm high. If you can, choose a dining table with a design where the top just sits on top of one or two pedestal legs, without the need for any additional structure. The addition of drawers or a ‘skirt’ of wood round the edge of the table top will impede any leg movement. It is also advisable to push your table in over your banquette seat by around a third. This will help stop you feeling too far from the table when seated. Also, try to choose a table that is around 40cm shorter than your banquette. This will ensure that people can remain seated before they need to shimmy out from around the table. The length of your banquette will therefore dictate the length of table you’ll need.

Ideal Banquette Seat Dimensions
The best seat height for your banquette is 45cm. If you are going to have a fixed or loose seat cushion, you will need to take its’ height into account as well. The optimum seat depth is also 45cm. This dimension should always be maintained with or without a back rest on your banquette. If you are using cushions it is best to allow for an additional 10cm. Scatter cushions need more depth because they take up more room, so if space is of concern, opt for a fixed back instead.
