Pedestal Dining Tables : the Pros and Cons

Pedestal Dining Tables

Have you ever noticed how certain items of furniture not only add style to a room but also make life infinitely easier? Pedestal Dining Tables are a perfect example. Not only a feast for the eyes, this style of table is endlessly practical too. Let us take you through the many benefits of pedestal tables and why they might just be what your dining space is missing.

What is a Pedestal Table ?

The dictionary definition of a pedestal dining table states that it is a particular style of table supported by a single, central column. However, we would also add, that this style can have two or more pedestals along the centre line to support the length of the table top. Each pedestal then rests on a spreading foot or feet. This style is in contrast to the traditional style of table with four legs at each corner.

What style table leg do I need ?

You may be at the stage of choosing a new dining table for your kitchen renovation and wondering if a table with pedestal style legs will fit the bill. Pedestal tables can be found in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. You may be looking for a round bistro style table for a cosy corner or a much larger table for your traditional dining room. Whatever your spec, there are some pros and cons to choosing a pedestal table above one with 4 legs.

The Pros of Pedestal Dining Tables

  • Extra Seating: By far the biggest advantage of a table with pedestal style legs is that you gain extra room. If the legs of your traditional table are inset under the table top you are likely to loose as much as a couple of feet of usable space. Pedestals open up the corners of your table allowing you to use more chairs on the same size table.
  • Ideal table design for Banquette Seating: A pedestal style table is the perfect pairing with banquette seating or dining benches. Having a table with legs that are set in away from the edges of the top creates plenty of space to get in and out of the table. Check out our article A Table For Banquette Seating : How to Maximize your Dining Space to find out more.
  • Versatility: Pedestal tables are available in a myriad of styles, shapes and sizes – from classic and traditional to minimal and modern. They are as equally suited to small intimate corner as they are to an open-plan kitchen dining space. They are a chameleon in the world of table legs. So whatever your taste, you are bound to find a design that complements your interior decor.
  • Design impact: A pedestal table design can seem more luxurious than a table with a 4 leg design. If you want your dining table have impact, then a pedestal table is a savvy design choice. A solid oak pedestal table handmade to bespoke dimensions is more than just a table, it’s statement piece.
  • Easier cleaning: Having a pedestal base can help with an easier clean up after dinner. Less legs to negotiate makes sweeping or hoovering a much simpler task. For this reason pedestal bases are ideal in high traffic areas like dining rooms and commercial spaces.

The Cons of Pedestal Dining Tables

  • Price: Despite the many benefits of a pedestal table, some designs are more expensive to buy than those with 4 legs. Pedestals are generally larger and take more time, effort and materials to make and the price will reflect this.
  • Stability: This can be an issue on some designs; a round or square table with a single pedestal is perhaps more prone. Because the support is in the centre, leaning on the edges of the top can sometimes cause it to tip. On a larger table, the balance can be offset with the design of the base and spread of the feet. Our Pedestal Refectory Table with 2 pedestals for example, will not have this issue.

To Summarise….

Pedestal tables are more than just a piece of furniture; they’re can be an impactful, space-saving solution with bags of style. Whether you are having the entire family for Christmas lunch or a cosy morning coffee at your breakfast nook, this design will adapt to your lifestyle.
